1  Introduction

There is a wealth of information in a typical flora. Species are described. Classification systems are proposed. Behind it all has been the examination of specimens. The specimens are the “hard data.”

Specimens are curated in herbaria. Species descriptions refer to specimens in these herbaria.

The purpose here is to “deconstruct” some of the information from a printed flora. Often, it is possible to use modern visualization tools to help enrich a flora’s terse style.
